Bethany Home - Shillong, NE India

Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya is one of the charming destinations in North-East India. The hill-station is situated at an altitude of 1, 496 meters above sea level and is abundant with the scenic combination of tall pines, mountains, valleys and meadows.  It is called the “Scotland of India”.

Bethany Children’s Home, situated in beautiful Shillong has existed for a number of years and the Christian school attached to it now has over 200 children attending from surrounding areas in North East India.  The school originally started in faith in the early 1970s, with the founding members of Bethany passing on the responsibility to Ps Kitbok Ryntathiang who now chairs the board for the school and orphanage.

Ps Lumlang Ryntathiang is the pastoral oversight for the School/Home and Bijoy Tamang is not only the school Principal but the Caretaker for the boys.  Ps Gary Levens first visited the school in 2008 and found out that the school and orphanage were going to close if there was no one to support the ministry.  Many of the teachers were volunteering their time and the boys could no longer be funded if no one would step in.  Now both ministries flourish and the children are loved and cared for.

Future plans include completing the school buildings; adding a Science wing so the children can receive a higher standard of education; planning and building a play area for the children; and building new accommodation so we can take in more children to give them  hope for a better future.
